About the Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge opened to pedestrians and vehicular traffic in 1937 after four years of construction. The project was a massive undertaking.
There are 600,000 rivets in each tower and 10 different contractors contributed to its construction. It connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County, and boasts one of the longest suspension spans in the world. Today it stands as icon in San Francisco, a must see for visitors and a gathering place for Bay Area residents. • Southeast Visitor Parking Lot • There are 37 parking spaces, including 26 general spaces, 6 bus stalls, and 3 spaces for visitors with disabilities • Metered parking costs $0.25 per 15 minutes • A nearby satellite lot parking is available for $5 per day on weekend and holidays • Northeast Visitor Parking Lot • Has free parking with a four hour limit • Most San Francisco offer drop-off and pick-up from the Golden Gate Bridge. • Many cross the bridge by bike; bicycle rental options can be found in the nearby Marina District or Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhoods, which is a great choice to avoid potentially full parking lots • Parking is extremely limited, so it may be wise to park nearby and opt for public transit to the bridge • Transit to the south end of the bridge: • Downtown: GGT bus – Routes 10, 70, and 101.
